The Health System in NSW apparently has 118,000 people. There is no way the arts graduate ministers in the Federal Government would cope with 400,000 people in a national health system - it would be four times the size of the Defence Forces.

My stretch in NT Education administration from 1982 to 1992 saw the administrative empire building boom after Bob Hawke gained power. It may not have been illegal but it was immoral for Federal Grants to be whittled away by administraion charges to the point where the person at the coal face was left with less than 50% to apply to courses/teaching/resources/
Is the situation the same in NSW? I rather suspect there is a need for a lot of pruning.

A key problem with the management of the public health system under Labor is its over-centralisation, added layers of bureaucratic red tape and remote decision making. As a result patients’ interests get lost. This trend has proved to be particularly inappropriate for decisions concerning patient services and clinical treatment.
In my recently released policy document 'Management of the NSW Health System- Making it work' I have touched on the very issue you have identified, but based on recommendations from the many doctors I have had discussions with, we have given authority back to Clinicians in a different way, but one which I believe will be effective.
